Ringing in the New Year

When you think of the New Year what is the first word that pops into your mind? Probably something along the lines of "resolution", "goals" or possibly "new beginnings." Whatever the word or phrase may be, you are probably looking to improve something in your life, whether it be big or small, as you embark in this new year.

I don't need to tell you how rough 2020 has been to all of us. What I can say is, 2020 gave us an opportunity to slow down and look inward. Time, to reevaluate where we were in our lives. That is not an opportunity that many get in our society. With that being said, might I suggest a new way to seek improvement, and yes, even make some resolutions in this new year.

Intrinsic motivation can be defined as "motivation that stems not from external factors like grades and status, but rather from genuine interest and ambition" (25 Ways to Cultivate Intrinsic Motivation, 2013). Although it may be true that the goals we accomplish may always have some sense of extrinsic benefits, it is important to develop healthy forms of motivation. The healthiest forms of motivation tend to come from inside of us.

This kind of thought process, when applied to our goal making and the accomplishing of such goals, can bring about great benefits in our lives. It is important to look at our goals as something we truly want to do, not as means to be accepted by the masses. This is when the hard work begins to be something that we look forward to, rather than something to dread.

There are many ways to cultivate intrinsic motivation, but one that I believe can help all of us is to look at the higher purpose behind our goals. Why are you doing what you are doing? What, for you, makes accomplishing this so important? Will accomplishing this goal help make the world a better place, even if it is in a small way. Do you believe in what you are doing?
